Chelsea fans are calling for the sale of Malo Gusto and Wesley Fofana this summer following their performance against Sunderland. The Blues lost 2-1 at the Stadium of Light and finished the season in 10th place.

The FFIA Club World Cup champions needed just a draw on the final day of the season to finish seventh and qualify for the Europa League next season. Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford could not get wins in their games today, but the Blues failed to make the most of the situation.

Cole Palmer scored the lone goal for Chelsea to pull the scoreline to 2-1 after Trai Hume and an own goal from Malo Gusto gave Sunderland a two-goal lead. Meanwhile, Fofana got sent off for a second yellow in the game when the Blues were chasing the game.

The fans were furious with the two Frenchmen in the starting XI and posted after the game:

Gusto spoke about the Chelsea season earlier this month, admitting that it has been a disappointment. He hopes to end the season on a high, but has instead finished with an own goal.

“The season is not finished – there are two games left. We are disappointed tonight, but we have to move forward now. We have two games left in the Premier League and we have to fight again.”

Gusto is set to play at the FIFA World Cup this summer, while his Chelsea teammate Fofana has not been called up.

Xabi Alonso on joining Chelsea this summer

Xabi Alonso has been appointed as Chelsea’s manager, and he will officially start work on July 1. However, he has been given addition powers and will thus be involved in the transfers from June.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club, and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

Alonso has been a free agent since leaving his role at Real Madrid in January. He was linked with Liverpool before making a move to Chelsea.
