Last rites of Twisha Sharma performed at Bhopal crematorium 12 days after her death

The last rites of Twisha Sharma were performed at a crematorium in Bhopal on Sunday, after her body was handed over to the family following the completion of key medical formalities. The funeral took place amid mounting public attention on the case, with the family continuing to demand justice in the alleged dowry death matter.Welcoming the Supreme Court’s decision to take suo motu cognisance of the case, Twisha Sharma’s cousin Ashish Sharma said the family had struggled to secure a second post-mortem examination and expressed hope that the apex court’s intervention would help ensure justice. “We are grateful for this verdict by the Supreme Court that will restore faith in justice. We had to struggle a lot for the second post-mortem. At least the family will now be able to carry out the last rites, which will be done soon after the medical procedures,” Ashish Sharma said. His remarks came as a four-member team of senior doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences arrived in Bhopal to conduct a second autopsy, in compliance with directions issued by the Madhya Pradesh high court. Also read: ‘Twisha Sharma’s last rites to be held after medical procedures’- What we know so farTwisha’s uncle, Lokesh Sharma, also voiced confidence in the judicial process following the Supreme Court’s intervention. “A common man can just have faith since the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance. We are hopeful that we will get justice. We will do the last rites before the reports,” he said. The Supreme Court on Saturday took suo motu cognisance of the Twisha Sharma dowry death case, citing alleged institutional bias and procedural irregularities. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi is scheduled to hear the matter on Monday.Meanwhile, Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, and the state government have separately approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh by a Bhopal court. Both petitions are slated to be heard on Monday. The case sparked nationwide outrage after Twisha’s family staged protests and demanded an independent investigation, alleging attempts to subject the deceased to a “posthumous character trial.”Also read: ‘They will bring justice’ – Twisha’s father hopeful as AIIMS team reaches Bhopal for 2nd autopsySamarth Singh, Twisha’s husband and the prime accused in the case, was arrested on Friday evening after arriving at the Jabalpur district court premises to surrender. Singh had been absconding since the FIR was registered and had earlier withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea filed before the Madhya Pradesh High Court.A Bhopal court on Saturday remanded him to seven days of police custody.Twisha Sharma, a Noida-based model-turned-actor, was found dead on May 12 at her in-laws’ home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area, just months after marrying advocate Samarth Singh. Her family has accused her husband and his family, including retired district judge Giribala Singh, of subjecting her to dowry harassment and mental torture.
